He drive for DoorDash and said he’s have never opened a letter from the IRS ever. He said he’s done this for almost the last ten years and hasn’t paid a cent in taxes. Is that possible? Are people really just not paying taxes?
How often does this happen? Every year I pay my taxes and it hurts me Everytime but I do it out of fear of the consequences. It sucks knowing that I’m paying but he doesn’t have to (or at least he’s not paying and not having any consequences)
I spoke with someone today who admits they don’t pay taxes

It depends on how much he earned
I don’t know how old this person is but at some point it will catch up with him/her. You need tax papers to apply to college, if you need public assistance, if you need health insurance, if you want to buy a house, and when you retire and want to collect social security they won’t have a work record and won’t get any. So it’s only a matter of time they will get caught or backed into a corner.
It happens all the time that people don’t declare things and this tactic works until it doesn’t. Either they’re lying to you (or bending the truth), or one day it’s probably going to catch up with them.
With that being said (assuming you’re in America) the IRS are very understaffed at the moment so people will likely get away with things.
My father in law stopped brushing his teeth and going to the dentist. Didn’t want to.
Eventually they had to pull all his teeth.
He was blissfully happy up to that point.
There is a lesson here.
Assuming they aren’t just lying
You’d be shocked by both the volume of fraudulent/evading low income taxpayers, but also the likely magnitudes larger amounts of taxes the ultra wealthy evade
Granted, for the typical low income taxpayer, there are generally more consequences
There’s always consequences, death and taxes are the only guarantees in life
If he’s making less than the minimum required to report, he’s fine.
If not, it will catch up to him one day and he will owe all the taxes he should have paid for the last 10 years.
He works for DoorDash so his earnings are recorded. It’s not like he’s delivering and getting paid cash under the table
It’s possible he hasn’t faced consequences because the IRS is understaffed and going after a delivery driver is not exactly a priority.
If or when he tries to do anything that requires any sort of financial background check, it will trigger an alert and he better hope he has the money to hire an accountant and lawyer to avoid prison
If you never file there is no statute of limitations and any 1099 sent in with your SSN will eventually end up with an IRS letter showing taxes dues and serious interest and penalties and a levy and they will garnish your wages eventually and often bankruptcy might be your best option. If making over $600 in a year DoorDash likely reporting it to the IRS.
People do exaggerate the consequences of many aspects of taxes as the odds of being audited are slim but not filing at all is about the dumbest strategy to try and avoid paying taxes.
Smarter way would be file and use mileage to offset the income if doing DoorDash.
People are gonna say youre lying but two people told me that same shit last year I couldn’t believe it .
