From September through May, I live and work in New York State, and then I spend my summers in California. Summers are getting boring, so I'd like to get my California driver's license so I can work Uber, Lyft, whatever.

Will having a California license somehow complicate my taxes? New York is my primary residence, and I want to pay taxes there.

    Thanks for your help.

Can an out-of-state driver's license interfere with taxes?

If you’re working in California, you owe taxes on that income regardless of your permanent residence.

    2. It would only be terrible because NY and CA might be the two most aggressive tax regimes out of all the states.

Also, generally you pay taxes based off where you work and get a corresponding credit to the state you live in.

    3. Working and living in two states will complicate your taxes.. regardless of where – or even if – you get your drivers license.

California is going to expect you to pay tax on income that you make in California… regardless of what you may or may not have going on in New York.

New York is also going to expect you to pay tax on any income that you make in New York.
