Hi all
Just got married a couple weeks ago. My wife and I are FT hourly employees for different companies but we make within $1/hr of each other. Neither of us have student loans nor any medical debt. We do not have children nor do we own a home (we rent a townhouse). We take standard deductions and I claim additional educational credits because I am in college right now (paid for out of pocket, again…no student loans).
We are struggling to figure out if we should keep our W4 forms with work listed as Single/MFS or if we should update them in some way.
Do we change to MFJ and mark the box for "multiple jobs or my spouse works"? Do we need to make any extra withholding?
If necessary we could meet with a local tax professional to help but i figured i would check for free advice from the Reddit masses first.
In case it is important:
1) my wife and I both get OT opportunities
2) neither of us expect bonuses
3) my wife just started her current job in May 2025 but i have been with my company for ~3.5y
My primary concern is if we simply change filing status on the W4 and mark multiple jobs without adding additional withholding then we may end up with a tax bill this year.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Please let me know if additional info is needed
Just got married – we make very similar money – file jointly or separately?

Regardless of how you decide to file your taxes, your w4 setting does not need to change. The single/married filing separately setting on your w4 is just fine even for those that plan to file joint. It will withhold the same as changing it to married filing joint, spouse also works checked. Same setting as Single/married filing separately, but more room for employer error.
