Here are the steps to pay back $1400 tax rebate that was incorrectly deposited for many folks. Follow these steps and you should be good.
-
Create your account or Log in to https://www.irs.gov/your-account -> Sign in to Individual account
-
Check your balance for Tax Year 2021, by going to your Transcripts (in your tax documents, online). When you log in you can find the transcripts under
"records and status" > "tax records" > "view transcripts" -
In your Transcripts, select 2021 and see what the outstanding balance is. It should be 1400 plus a few dollars (for me it was about $5.65)
-
Now that you have the exact figure, go back to the main page on your IRS account. Click on: Make a payment -> Select
"pay towards your balance" in payment type -> Select Tax year "2021" -> Enter the exact amount to pay -> Confirm. -
Print or save the confirmation that you receive at the end, and you're set. You should also receive an email with same details.
-
It will take 1-2 weeks for payment to process and your 2021 transcript will be updated. It should now show zero (negative is also fine).
My transcript updated in 1-week post payment.

I thought the 1400 rebate wasn’t clawbackable ?
