Good morning. This is gonna be pretty long. 😅 I needed advice on how to go about my situation with my 2024 Tax Return. I’m so confused on what’s going on. So I did my taxes on Free Tax USA at the beginning of the year. When I did my return I received a letter in mail saying I needed to verify my identity for my 2024 Tax Return. For some reason I waited until the last day to do that & when I did try to verify my identity on the IRS website I clicked the incorrect button & I was not able to verify my identity online instead. The same day I called the IRS customer service line & let one of them know the situation and the agent told me since I wasn’t able to verify my identity online I would have to basically redo my 2024 Tax Return & mail them in instead of having them e-filed like I did in the first place. Around the time this happening I was pretty busy in life & sadly didn’t get to mailing the return in. A few months later I reached out to Free Tax USA & let them know how the IRS agent told me since I didn’t verify my identity online I had to mail in my 2024 tax returns now. They seemed a bit confused but the rep at Free Tax USA let me know ultimately that the IRS accepted my return earlier this year, so I shouldn’t have to mail them in & to call the IRS back to see how to go about verifying my identity another way. I called the IRS and they ended up sending me the CP5071 form through mail months ago to verify my identity instead. I eventually got the letter & called them over the phone and verified. It’s been MONTHS & it’s still showing on my IRS profile that my 2024 tax return has still not been submitted. I even called the IRS yesterday to see why my status still showed that & the representative basically told me it doesn’t show we’ve received them yet. I didn’t have time to really talk with someone because I had already waited hours to speak with someone & I had to be at work soon. I also let Free Tax USA know about how the IRS agent had told me yesterday she still didn’t see it & the rep told me the same thing the previous rep with Free Tax USA said earlier this year which was basically the IRS accepted it & even showed me my submission ID to give them so they can see it was accepted. I tried calling the IRS like 30 minutes ago but the automated line told me due to high call volume they weren’t able to help me. 🫩 IDK if I said the incorrect thing or if there was something I was supposed to say to get help with this situation but I’m just so confused & ready to be done with this. I’ve been very patient about this situation, but I just want to know what are the next steps to go about this? I’m receiving letters in mail that I may get a lien on my account for prior years I owed, but the thing is I was going to use my 2024 Tax Return to pay for the years I owe since I finally got a refund. What is your advice on how I should go about this? Thanks for any of your input!

EDIT: I wanted to setup a long term payment plan with the IRS, but since it’s showing as if I didn’t do my 2024 Tax Return they won’t allow me to do the long term payment plan. My refund is not going to cover the full amount I owe.

    1. It takes months for the IRS to process mailed correspondence. Like 6-18 months depending on where it goes, who was working from home, who got furloughed through the shut down. You can try to contact your local congressional representative, or taxpayer advocate, to see if they can speed things up, but you probably just have to wait it out

    2. Its just going to take a while is the short answer. The IRS was backlogged to begin with before the shutdown.

    3. Maybe call the number on the CP5071 again. Make sure your answers were accepted and the employee followed through to release the tax return for processing. I have read that this identity thing doesn’t go through the first time.

FreeTaxUSA has nothing to do with this anymore. No need to talk to them. They have no control over what the IRS does. The fact that you received a CP5071 means the IRS did receive your return. It’s stuck in computer limbo.
