My cousin had a guy file her taxes because he claimed he could get her a bigger refund supposedly $14,369. This was about six months ago, and when she checks the status, it still shows “processing.” Can anyone explain what he might have put on her return to make the refund that high?

I also noticed the PDF says: “Balance due/overpayment using computer figures: -$14,369.” Does this mean the balance zeroes out and she won’t get any refund, or does it mean she owes that amount?

I’m fully aware this was a terrible decision on her part and she’ll probably face penalties. I’m just trying to get some clarification on what this status actually means.

    1. The bulk of the refund is from $12,669 in reported withholding on her wages. Check her W-2’s. Does the total of box 2 from each firm equal that amount? If not, then yeah, the IRS is going to fix the return.

    2. Based on what you said earlier when you posted this and then deleted it, it’s a fraudulent return and needs to be corrected.
