Hi! I’m new to this country and would like some of your input. Me and my husband filed jointly last year for 2024 (we got married the same year). My husband has tax owing amounting to $2,600 (it was $3000ish before then we got a refund of $900 from filing jointly and applied the refund to the owing). Now we have a child born Oct 2025.

If we file jointly for this year, will the refund go to the amount that he owes again? Will it be beneficial if filed separately? Lmk!!

Should we file jointly or separately?

You will most likely pay less tax if you file jointly. You have to pay his tax debt in any case, so haveing the tax refund go toward the debt isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

You can reduce your withholding this year if you don’t want to have such a big refund for 2026.
