Im trying to help my daughter who has recently turned 18. She has never filed before. We filed Federal with HR Block but the state return kept getting stuck on wanting insurance information but it would not take me to the page to enter it. Seemed like it was stuck in a loop since she was claimed as a dependent (for 2025) and therefore was insured under my family plan. Being unfortunately impatient, I went ahead and filed just the federal.
Now I need to file her MA return, but every site wants to do both federal and state. I thought, ok, I'll send them both and let the federal bounce back. Unfortunately it bounces back the state too, even though a federal has been successfully filed for her.
I tried using MassTaxConnect but it will not work for a first time filer.
Help! How do we get the state filed?

You will have to file the state return by mail.
Massachusetts has its own state-run e-file site (MassTaxConnect) but I believe that in order to use it, you must have previously filed a return in MA. So it’s not possible to use it for the first year filing.
