My daughter (Michigan resident) had an internship in Minnesota for the summer. She received two W-2s from the internship employer in Minnesota. The first W-2 has boxes 1 to 6 populated with Federal wages and withholdings and the box 15 with the state of Michigan and state wages and state income tax. The other W2 she received has boxes 1 to 6 empty and box 14 says FED W-2 DATA IS ON SEPERATE W-2, this also has Box 15 with the state Minnesota and state wages and state income tax with different state income tax than the first W-2. I assume this second W2 is the Minnesota income tax the state collected. I can enter the first W-2 with the boxes 1 to 6 filled out and MI income and taxes. When I try to add the second W-2 that has no info for Box 1 to 6 and add the Box 15, 16, 17 for the MN state wages and income tax I get an error saying I need to fill Box 1 to 6. I am concerned if I enter those from the first W-2 it will think her wages and withholding for Federal taxes with be doubled. After some searching I also found out that Michigan and Minnesota have tax reciprocity exemption but she was not aware of the form and it was probably not submitted. I assume she will have to file a Michigan and Minnesota state returns but how do I enter the information correctly in FreeTaxUSA?

It is just one W-2. You can enter the state information for more than one state on a single W-2 in FreeTaxUSA. However, I am not sure if it will handle the reciprocity part or not. If it does not work out, you may need to leave the MN information off. Then find out how to get back all the withholding from MN. Filing based on reciprocity for wages is often handled in a unique way but I am not familiar with MN’s forms.
