Last year for 2024 I paid $1,097 to state. This year I switched to a new accountant and was mentioned that NYS will give me a refund of $321. However, this didn't happen and I ended up receiving a letter with a balance due of $776.

I already made an account and responded to this bill. Should I just go ahead and pay to prevent further interest accrual or just wait? I also already called the number but it went through a loop of nowhere.

I don't know much about tax, so any information that I can provide, I will do my best. This was a joint filing between me and my husband.

    1. You should not wait on this NYS bill because once the state sends a balance due notice, interest and penalties can keep increasing every month, and the amount can become higher than $776. This usually happens when New York adjusts your return, finds missing income, or changes credits after review, especially when switching accountants or filing jointly.

I’ve seen many cases where people waited thinking it was a mistake, and the penalty kept growing even while they were trying to contact the department.
