Hello, my daughter has been accepted into a graphic design program with the local community college. She is a high school student but they team up for a few students each year for a 2 year program with the local college. It allows for some college credits to be earned early. It’s highly suggested that they have a good laptop which is something we will need to buy. Is that something we can write off on our taxes as an education expense?

Laptop for high schooler tax deductible?

    1. Potentially, but if you think she’s going to go to a full four years of undergrad, I wouldn’t recommend trying to claim the laptop now.

You can only claim things like laptops when claiming the American Opportunity Tax Credit, and each student can only claim AOTC four times in their life. It’s probably better to save those four AOTC years for years when she has more expenses and can claim the maximum credit, instead of using one of those years now when she/you won’t get the full benefit.

You can still claim the Lifetime Learning Credit based on what you pay for her tuition for the course, as well as any books that you/she buy from the community college for the course, but not the laptop.
