The excess Roth 401k contribution was made in 2025. The excess (plus earnings) was returned to me in February 2026. The plan administrator says I will not receive my 1099-R until 2027. That seems perfectly fine for the earnings portion since the earnings go on my 2026 tax return. But I am now sitting here doing my 2025 taxes. How do I "show" the IRS that I already received the return of excess if I don't have the 1099-R? I really don't want to file an amended 2025 return next year if I can help it. But is that my only option?

How do I prove timely return of excess Roth 401k without a 1099-R?

Don’t let the tail wag the dog. You messed up a little math, you fixed it quickly, now just tell the IRS what you did.

Use the ‘common sense’ approach. Report the income, attach a note, & sleep like a baby tonight knowing you’re debt free & tax compliant!
