Last year I put off taxes to the last second and tried to file with turbotax but they wanted a 4 or 5 digit key from the prior year that I couldn't find.
I filed&recieved an extention and printed my stuff on paper. I then moved, lost the papers and mostly forgot about it all. I got my 2024 state return at some point despite never sending my papers.
I made less than 15k last year so nothing was withheld and I wasn't expecting a federal return or to owe the fed anything.
I am filing this years taxes with turbotax now and wanted a few things clarified:
– how did i get my state return? (Google says that some platforms can auto file but when I checked to see if turbotax does it said no.)
– do i mail last year's taxes?
– how does this change this year's taxes?
I keep loosing the plot so I'm going to pack up and go to bed. I'm happy to provide clarification on anything.
With gratitude,
The Sharpest Marble in the Milkshake
I didn't file my taxes last year but I still got my state return. How why and what now?

Why was nothing withheld? Likely there was tax withheld but you were under standard deduction so owe no tax.
Since you are due refund you have 3 years to file no extension needed. I would file and get my money.
There are 50 states with differing procedures you really should mention your state if you want an answer to the state question.
