So we’re in a bit of a situation we have never experienced something like this so about a month ago our car was involved in an accident, adjuster went out to copart to asses damages and estimated about 3k after a couple more weeks it was sent to the body shop (it’s a relatives body shop). We just found out today they have been I contact with our insurance and that car has more damage then the initial estimate 😭 and our insurances loss department called us saying they’re fees for holding the car 12 days is outrages.
But I’m confused what is going to happen are we responsible for those fees? Will they negotiate with the body shop?
My husband is just frustrated because he is saying we should have never went with family but I’m assuming every body shop has to do their part in assessing damages. Oh not to mention copart lost our key as well 😭
BTW we’re in California.
Insurance deemed car total loss but says body shop fees are excessive.

Depends on what the shop wants for storage per day. You picked the shop.
In my area I have seen towing & storage charges of over $3000 for a vehicle brought in on a Friday night and the insurance wants to pick it up on a Tuesday.
Shops sometimes charge over $200 per day and outrageous admin fees, relocation fees etc
Well you’re heading towards an awkward Thanksgiving dinner. Insurance companies will only pay reasonable storage fees. How much are they charging per day and why is it at the point that they are even charging storage in the first place?
Typically, once a body shop does a teardown (which is covered by insurance) and the car is deemed a total loss, you’ll be asked to release your car to the insurance company to go back to copart. What happened in the process to where you now owe 12 days of storage?
They will try but if the fees are crazy they will just pay what is needed to get their car out of prison and deduct it from your settlement.
