Hi folks, I am a real noob at credit cards and would like to level up my game a bit. So far I have been using my CSP as my main, one-stop-shop card for the past few years. It has been working alright, but I know it is definitely not an ideal setup in terms of potential value. I am interested in developing my card portfolio mainly focused on travel and dining as those are two of my top categories currently.

I am very poor at keeping track of coupons and constantly rotating categories and other things like that, so I highly value simplicity. My ideal setup would consist of a handful of active use cards (no more than 3 ideally), where the scope of usage would be well defined for each. For example, Card 1 would be for dining, Card 2 for booking travel, Card 3 as a catch-all, etc. Min-maxing card usage for the maximum value is overwhelming and intimidating to me, so I'd prefer a simpler setup and system. Mixing ecosystems is fine, but any tips on how to manage that easily would be appreciated!

Regarding travel habits, I tend to travel ~2-3 times internationally per year, and ~4-5 times domestically per year. My main airport is SFO (and OAK), so while United has a large share, Delta and American (and Southwest) are all commonly available as well. I have no airline or hotel loyalty, so I do not consider transfer partners to be particularly important criteria.

I have been considering the main logical "upgrades" to the CSP, being the CSR, Amex Plat, and C1 VX. However, my lack of experience with cards makes it difficult to accurately evaluate the pros and cons of the different options. Annual fee does not matter to me, as I am sure most if not all travel cards provide perks (mostly travel-related) that make up for it anyways. Below is my filled-out recommendation template.

    Current cards:

    • Chase Sapphire Preferred
      • $22,700 limit
      • Sept 2022
    • Wells Fargo Active Cash (formerly Cash Back College Visa)
      • $4,400 limit
      • March 2016

    FICO Score: 798

Oldest account age: 9 years 1 month

    Chase 5/24 status: 0/24

    Income: $155,000

    Average monthly spend and categories:

    • dining $800
    • groceries: $150
    • gas: $100
    • travel: $700
    • other (online shopping, entertainment, home, health, etc): $1000

Values were calculated via taking year-end summary totals and dividing by 12; not the best accuracy, but I don't have a very good picture otherwise as my spending habits are inconsistent throughout the year.

    Open to Business Cards: No

What's the purpose of your next card?: Travel

Do you have any cards you've been looking at?

    • Chase Sapphire Reserve + Chase Freedom Unlimited
    • Amex Gold + Amex Plat
    • Capital One Venture X + ???

Are you OK with category spending or do you want a general spending card?

Majority of my categorizable spending is dining and travel, so aside from those categories a general spending card would probably make more sense to catch all of the other random spending?

    Thanks all for the help!

csr + freedom unlimited combo would work pretty well for you actually. csr covers dining at 3x and travel at 3x, then freedom unlimited gets you 1.5x on everything else as catch-all card

with your spending patterns ($800 dining + $700 travel monthly) you’d definitely get value from the higher annual fee since csr gives better redemption rates through chase portal. plus the travel credits help offset some of that fee

amex setup gets complicated with multiple cards and transfer partners, which goes against what you want for simplicity
