My 3 yr old opened his door miliseconds after parking at the Easter egg hunt on Easter and hit someone’s moving vehicle. It left a mark probably about 2 ft on someone’s van. The passenger got out and we looked at it and most of it wiped off, she told me it was a company vehicle (her husband was driving however) they were looking for a parking spot (we took the last one on the residential road and I parked half on the curb). It was really bad timing, I gave them my insurance and we talked about me paying out of pocket potentially. She said several times that there’s a chance the company would just make a wash of it because it’s a fleet vehicle. Come to find out they want it fixed. And it’s going to be over $2000. Can anyone give me advice… insight… anything on this? Please don’t bash me because it was very unexpected and an honest accident caused by my little who was just excited to go to the Easter egg hunt.

Report the incident to your insurance and tell the company to work with them. Activate the child locks on your doors to prevent similar issues in the future.

Your insurance will indemnify you against the damages. Your rates likely will go up for future renewals.

Wait for them to fix it and send you a final bill and get a signed release of any further damages, or open a claim with your insurer if you don’t want to pay it out of pocket. It’ll be an at fault collision claim.

Your options are to pay that repair bill out of pocket, or have them file a claim against your liability coverage on your car. Do you have any particular questions about either of those options? This seems like an incredibly straightforward situation.

And I’ll proactively say…..nobody on Reddit can tell you how much your insurance will go up if they file a claim.

    4. Not a lot of advice to give. You’re liable for that damage and you can either pay for it out of pocket or turn it in to their insurance company. Pretty straight forward. Was there some part of this you wanted clarity on?

    5. You contact your auto insurance company and go from there.

Ditch the attitude about it being a “honest accident” caused by “my little” – accidents happen, you pay for them when you or someone you are responsible for cause them. It’s just life.
