Hi, everyone! I am a college student and was wondering if it was worth opening a third card for myself.

For some background, I get money back from my school ~2k per semester and work an on campus job. The primary reason I am wondering is because I will go abroad this summer in China and do a semester abroad, so I wanted a second opinion on if what I have is fine.

The thing is I have to buy all my flights (and other costs) for summer plans and abroad study myself, and my friends have encouraged me to open another card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred. I do not regularly travel though for school and for now am not sure if it is worth paying for a card.

Current cards: (list cards, limits, opening date)

    – joint with parent Amex Blue $7,000 limit, Apr 2024

    – Discover IT $3,100 limit, Feb 2025

    – Capital One Savor $3,000 limit, Feb 2026

    – i also have a joint Chase card but i do not have it physically so often do not use it

    1. I don’t believe there are currently any “joint cards”. You are probably an authorized user on your parent’s cards, which may help somewhat with your credit score but ultimately it’s cards in your own name only that will build up your credit profile.

Honestly with your low income and spend, it’s probably not worth it to get another card, especially one with an annual fee. Chase most likely wouldn’t approve you for the Sapphire Preferred anyways because the mjnimum credit line is $5000 and they usually want you to have another card of theirs first, again especially when you don’t have an extended credit profile of your own.
Your current savor should serve you well with no Foreign Transaction Fees.
