Hey everyone, I’m currently working in commercial insurance as an associate/assistant advisor and thinking about moving into underwriting. I’ve been doing really well in my current role and feel like I’ve already mastered a lot of the day-to-day work, so I’m starting to think more seriously about long-term career growth and where I want to go next.

Underwriting seems like a strong path because it’s more technical, still involves some relationship-building, and offers a more stable lifestyle compared to sales roles. I’m aiming for something that can realistically get me to around $90–100k in a few years while maintaining a good work-life balance. I’m aware the first year or so might be a bit of a grind, but I’m okay with that if the long-term trajectory makes sense.

For those of you in underwriting, how has your experience been in terms of salary progression, stress, and overall career satisfaction? Do you feel like it was the right move compared to staying on the broker/advisor side?

If you like the analytical side of insurance, underwriting can be a good career choice. In my experience, it tends to be more stable than broker jobs, but it can also be less exciting depending on the company. The first year can be intense, but the rest of the time, things tend to follow a set path.
