Sorry in advance if this question isn't appropriate for this forum. Also forgive any poor use of terminology or confusion – I'm really not familiar with crypto.

More than 10 years ago a friend of mine who knew I was into the idea of alternative currencies gifted me a bitcoin. At the time I think the price was about $80. As I remember it, the gift came in the form of a QR code. I had no idea what I was doing but I believe I registered an account with MTGox and put the code in there somehow and that's where I left it. Later I guess MTGox collapsed and I suppose my coin disappeared. I haven't thought of it much and never really regretted losing it because I know that I never would have held onto it this long to see such a dramatic rise in value. But the other day I was trying to explain bitcoin to my kid and I told him this story and how I thought it was almost certainly gone forever. It got me thinking though; is it gone, or is there some way to track it down?

There was a very big bankruptcy process that you had to take part in. I think any claim you had would be expired now, but you can try contacting the firm that handled the bankruptcy. Maybe start at mtgox.com. The last contact I had from them was in 2018 (I only left 1ยข on the platform but they still informed me every step of the way.)
