I’m 27, working full-time with a decent salary and strong savings, but I’ve never used a credit card—only debit. As a result, I currently have no credit history.

I want to start building credit now and also take advantage of rewards (cash back or travel points). I’m a very responsible spender and plan to pay balances in full every month, so I’m not worried about carrying debt.

My main concern is approval odds given my thin/empty credit profile.

    Questions:

    • What cards should I realistically be targeting as a first card?
    • Is there any benefit to starting with a secured card in my situation, or can I skip that?
    • Any strategy tips for building credit quickly and efficiently once I get started?

    Appreciate any advice. Thanks

At 27 with solid income you can probably skip the secured card route. Most major banks have starter cards designed for people with no history – they usually approve based on income verification when you dont have existing credit

Id go for something basic with no annual fee first. Cash back cards tend to be easier to get approved for than travel cards when youre starting out. Once you get that first one and use it responsibly for like 6 months you’ll start getting pre approval offers for better cards

The key is just using it regularly but keeping utilization low – like under 10% of your limit. Pay it off completely each month and your score will build pretty quickly since you have that income backing you up
