Hi yall I’m going into graduate school and the only way to fund my education is to through privates loans. I had a few specific question for those who have used.

    1. When it comes to private lenders do they only let you take out for a semester (6 months) or for the entire year? I ask because I know lender check with the school to make sure it matches their COA.

    2. let’s say I borrow 50k for tuition and cost of living but then realize I need more for living expenses can I request for more to the same lender or would need to submit a different application/ find a new lender

    3. What should I watch out for before signing?

    4. Any specific lenders yall recommend especially where you are not a citizen

Thank yall for reading this and any tips help!

been down this road with grad school funding so here’s what i learned the hard way

most private lenders will let you borrow for the full academic year, not just semester by semester. they coordinate with your school’s financial aid office to verify enrollment and COA limits. makes the process way less of a headache than reapplying every few months

for your second question – if you need more money mid-year it gets tricky. some lenders might let you request additional funds if you’re still under the annual limit, but most will make you go through a whole new application process. definitely worth asking upfront what their policy is on additional disbursements

red flags to watch for: variable interest rates that can spike later, origination fees, and prepayment penalties. also read the fine print on deferment options – some lenders are way more flexible than others if you hit financial trouble after graduation

can’t help much with the non-citizen lender recommendations since that wasn’t my situation, but i’ve seen people mention discover and sallie mae being more open to international students with US cosigners. might want to search this sub for more recent posts about that specific scenario
