My husband was hit and injured by a Kemper (infinity) insured in August 2025. After months of incompetence from their company, we finally received the settlement for the accident. Now March 2026, they are contacting us saying we need to get the vehicle from the salvage yard and pay the storage fees.

Back story: the vehicle was originally towed to another yard, and Kemper told us to sign the vehicle over to them, so they can tow it to "their" salvage yard where they won't be charged fees. We signed it over, and paid the original yard fees. Now Kemper is trying to say after paying us, that the totaled vehicle needs to be picked up and fees need to be paid again 🤔 trying to get me to sign that we am still the owner and promising they will auction it "for me". But our understanding when signing the settlement form was that once signed we no longer owned the vehicle. Any help or guidance from anyone who have knowledge or have dealt with this company will be appreciated.

Additional information: the person contacting us now is not the original adjuster. She said our file landed on her desk as mishandled files that had not been resolved.

    1. The term you’re looking for is “detrimental reliance”. Basically, you did everything right, and they’re trying to make you pay for their mistake after the fact. If you have copies of the paperwork you signed originally, give them a copy. If they continue to push, you might complain to whoever regulates insurance in your state, but I will guess that will drop this pretty fast.
