The role of all media is to influence. Both corporate and new age media do it not by lying but by selectively informing. The truth has no narrative, humans make one out of it which isn’t automatically a bad thing.
The benefit of new age media is that they don’t have the same corporate incentive structure. They can say things that legacy media can’t. That’s why nowadays you can find people with pretty much any view you can think of, whereas in the past it was a lot more monolithic. This in my view is both the cause of and the solution to neofascism

Right-wing takes over American media, claims everyone else is lying anb biased while simultaneously actually lying, misleading and gaslighting the American people
Responsible media goes out of business, leaving only Right-wing propaganda
Leaving sane Americans to rightfully not trust current media sources

I don’t need to trust them, I just need to hear from them. To disregard them completely would be putting myself in a position where I don’t see events coming.
