Im going through a divorce and just got out of my old insurance with my ex. Sadly I accidentally scraped my neighbor’s car only 4 days after I got my new policy. Will I be able to file a claim normally or will I get any push back from my insurance.

As long as you just tell them what happened. I don’t see you getting pushed back or this being raised as a red flag. You’re at fault

If it’s truly only a scrape and you don’t have any damages to your car. Usually it’s frowned upon to handle out of pocket, but maybe since it’s neighbors you can handle out of pocket

    2. A claim is a claim whether it happens on day 1 or day 365, if the policy was active and that’s when the accident happened, it’s all good.

      They’ll just verify those facts.

    3. you did not het new insurance because you wanted to smash the neighbour car. You are fine.

My friend changed insurances and on the second day of her new insurance being active she hit a deer lol they deemed it an act of god and fixed her car.

    5. Is the effective date and time of the insurance before the accident? Even if it’s just a day, it should be fine as long as the accident happened after the policy took effect.

You can 100% file a claim 1 second after your policy is in force, but not 1 second before.

Now depending on how many claims you have, what your deductible is, and what the repair cost is, it may be better to work it out without insurance.

Like if it is a scratch that will cost 500 to buff out and your deductible is 1000 then don’t file a claim.

If it is a dent in 2 panels that will be 3000 to repair then file the claim.

If your old policy was still active at the occurrence, you should file with that as it won’t affect your new. This actually happened to me: my parking brake cable snapped and my car rolled down a hill. I had happened to overlap the insurances, thank God, and so I could file with the old policy.

I didn’t have much regret since they suddenly denied my homeowners’ renewal a few days before because of wiring concerns, but still wish my car hadn’t gotten messed up.
