2026 is my first time ever living abroad outside U.S. I landed in Portugal 5-Jan. I wanted to confirm that there is no way I can meet the bona fide resident test for 2026 because I wasn’t already in Portugal on 1-January and need to proceed with the physical presence test? I do have a lease that started 1 Jan. I would like to spend more than 35 days in the US visiting family/friends if possible this year but it seems unlikely. I also want to confirm I need to land in Portugal before New Year’s Eve of this year to qualify as a Bona fide resident for 2027?
