My gf is moving to San Diego for work, and I stay in Palo Alto. I'll visit her on almost every weekend. Southwest has great frequency from SJC, and United has good frequency from SFO. So should I get an airline-specific card or just a general travel card from Chase?

This sounds like a disaster for so many reasons. A credit card should be the last thing on your mind right now.
