Hey everyone!
I’ve been thinking about upgrading my Chase Sapphire Preferred to the Sapphire Reserve and downgrading my Amex Platinum to a Gold and looking for some advice.
I have a travel job and it’s highly discouraged to book hotels/flights on a travel portal. I’m not loving the coupons from the Amex and the 4x direct points from hotels is pretty enticing from the Reserve.
I’ve held the CSP since 2023 and the Platinum since 2025. Would my credit score be impacted by upgrading / downgrading these cards?
Here’s some additional data if helpful:
– I fly with United at least once a week (~$3,000 a month spent)
– I spend 2k with Marriott and National car rental monthly
– I have an 810 Fico score from Amex
– Open to any other card with similar benefits.
– $110k income.
– Oldest card in my name as primary is the Sapphire Preferred at 12-22
Anyone in a similar situation have a better recommendation for maximizing the points to be gained from a travel job? Thanks!
Need advice on upgrading credit card for travel intense job.

Moving from Platinum to Gold makes lot of sense if you’re not using those credits anyway. The upgrade to Reserve should be pretty smooth since you already have relationship with Chase for while now.
Your credit score won’t really get hit from product changes – they’re treating it as same account just different benefits. Only thing that might move the needle little bit is if Reserve has higher credit limit but that would actually help your utilization ratio.
For maximizing points with direct bookings the Reserve 4x on hotels is definitely solid choice. Just make sure you can actually use that annual travel credit effectively since its pretty specific about what qualifies
