I am an AU on my spouse's Venture X and we live in DC, so DCA and IAD are our airports. We love the C1 lounges at both; the DCA Landing is exceptional. Of course, now I can't gain entry without paying per visit or an annual fee.

I have pretty high velocity: I'm at 4/24 and hold 13 open cards, including 2 C1 cards of my own (Savor and Quicksilver). C1 will not approve me for the VX.

But I learned that C1 will allow me to upgrade my Quicksilver to VX now. So I'm trying to decide which is the better approach:

    1. Pay the $125 lounge-pass fee, slow down on my velocity a bit, and see if I can be in position for C1 to approve me for a new VX (with a SUB) in 2027.

    2. Take the Quicksilver to VX upgrade now and forego the SUB.

The biggest missing piece of info in this decision is what I would need to do to get approval for my own VX, which I understand is totally opaque. But curious if folks have experience with that.

Losing out on the VX SUB would be a bummer, but not so much if I was not gonna get approved, anyway.

With the $300 travel credit and 10k point anniversary bonus, I consider the VX to be pretty close to fee-free; we will make good use of both of those.

(My post is inspired by this very helpful thread that taught me about the QS-VX upgrade path!)

Should I upgrade Quicksilver to Venture X or wait for C1 to approve me?

    1. A new thing to consider with QS, they’re going to add uncapped 3% gas and grocery soon. If the card could become more useful.

What are your denial reasons for the VX on the preapproval tool?

If your denial reason is “too many opened accounts”, you are unlikely to be approved even if you garden. If it’s something else, I’d consider waiting to get the SUB.
