This might be a long one and please, for my sake, spare me the disappointed.
I got a car with no credit when I was 18 at a buy here, pay here place. (Mistake #1) I had zero knowledge regarding anything financial or how any of it worked. Long story short, I got preyed on. At the time of purchase, they told me they had to add CPI onto the loan to cover their asses, essentially. I thought, “oh that checks out considering in their eyes, I’m an unreliable 18 year old. Of course they’d be cautious” and took their word for it. (Mistake #2). They told me this would be a cheaper(!!!) option of insurance and I’d be good to go. So I thought, man what a deal! (Mistake #3). I happily signed my life away and walked off the lot with a piece of shit. (Mistake #143). Obviously nothing excuses my ignorance, but I was in a shit place and getting any sort of transportation actually saved my life.
1.5 years and abt 8 grand later, I get hit. (Minimal damage) Come to find out, my insurance doesn’t cover those damages. (NO WAYYYY. I’m using humor to cope because I’m going insane right now).
I assumed the CPI would cover shit because they told me it would. I’ve had full coverage for about 6 months now and read something about getting a refund for the time I was covered privately. So I looked into my loan more and realized just how much they fucked me over now that Ive gained more knowledge over time. I saw they could do a refund and remove the insurance if I had proof of insurance and a deductible at $500 or less. I looked at my insurance and realized my deductible was $1k.
I should mention I called them a few months ago and they said there’s no way they could remove it even if I had proof because it had to be removed within the first 3 months. Nowhere in the loan documents does it say that. Just says I need proof full coverage with 500 ded. BASICALLY I am just wondering if even a partial refund and removal is in the cards because I have done a lot of research and I’d rather get any sort of clarity before taking action.
Ps.
I am in the process of working with a trusted family member/advisor to get tf out of this and do something more responsible for myself financially. But a refund would help tremendously. Thanks for your time. :,)

If you google CPI, the very first thing that pops up is how CPI only protects the lender and not you.
It’s a shitty situation. We make mistakes and then we learn. You really, really have to do your due diligence and read the fine print when it comes to insurance (home, renters, health, car, etc.). Never assume anything.
