Hey all – I know a lot of you are living this right now. But wanted to share my reporting with you in case it resonates or is in any way helpful.
Thanks, as always, to this community for being a fount of information.
Hi /r/studentloans. I'm the PBS reporter who's been writing about student loans a lot recently. I have a new story about national defaults

Keep up the good work friend.. Plenty Taxpayer money for EVERYTHING except the beneficiary of the tax payer.
love PBS!
Those experts worry bc there will guaranteed be a default crisis lol
This is a really great article. I don’t understand how the government think this is a sustainable system when the data clearly shows it is not
Causes 7 million people to default. Cuts the department responsible for figuring that out. Haha. A strategic genius.
The government should not be allowed to keep whiplashing us as they have been. Eliminating payment plans, moving borrowers close to their 25-year forgiveness date to a 30-year plan, criminally high interest rates. Why are student loan borrowers so disrespected and essentially treated like a punching bag by our government and fellow citizens? And why isn’t student loan debt dischargeable via bankruptcy? It all makes me wish I had the means to move to another country with a coherent, functioning government that treats its citizens better rather than this polarized, cartoonish, ineffective government we have now.
Yea, My plan went from 80 a month to 160.
Now instead of 190 left over per pay period, I have 150.
Great article!
This thing does some impressive gymnastics to avoid reporting that the SAVE plan was illegal.
One day the US will figure out this is a parasite industry designed for lenders to own you for life.
I borrowed just over 120k. I have a master’s degree , I make decent money, but after paying on my loans for years my balance is now 210k. I’ve never been delinquent, never missed a payment that was required.
In the meantime, my mortgage has gone up from $2000 a month to $2600 a month. Every single bill I have is more expensive. My family shares a single vehicle ( I grew up poor and I can expect zero help from my family).
I am a senior engineer and I am terrified of losing my home. My wife and I have never been able to file taxes together except for this period of time where I’ve been on SAVE because they add her income to mine to calculate payments. I can’t discharge through bankruptcy. I cannot do anything besides sit around and wait for my perfect credit score to be destroyed by nearly $2k a month payments (if my intention is to quickly pay this down or avoid interest).
I’m actually in a good spot compared to most people. This administration is cruel and sadistic. They need to go and there needs to be sincere movement by people with student loans to lobby for change or just collectively stop paying.
Debt jubilee.
