EDIT: 30M and have never filed an insurance claim, if that makes any difference.

Monday I picked my mom up from the airport at around midnight using her car. We had just had some pretty bad thunderstorms and unbeknownst to me, flooding. Long story short I hit a patch of waist deep standing water going 40 MPH. It was at an underpass, pitch black, never even saw it until it was too late. I made it through, car seems fine expect the front right corner bumper panel broke and is hanging on by a thread. Would an insurance claim for this go through my own auto insurance? Is this worth filing a claim for or should I just pay an auto body shop out of pocket? Haven’t gotten any quotes and I know auto body isn’t cheap but I can’t imagine I’m looking at an insane amount to have it fixed.

Insurance claim for damage to my mom’s car while I was driving?

    1. Your mom’s insurance would be primary. This would be a collision loss. If your mom doesn’t have collision coverage, then your policy might be able to cover the damages, if you have collision coverage yourself, but this would be policy dependent. This all considering that you two do not live in the same household, if you do, then there may be other cover issues preventing payment.

Get a quote and work from there, because it would be an at-fault loss.
