I keep seeing people say the US chip bans were supposed to hold China back on AI. But it looks like it did the exact opposite.

Huawei is now on track to make about 12 billion dollars from AI chips this year. That's a 60 % jump. Their new Ascend 950PR is flying off the shelves with huge orders from ByteDance, Alibaba, and others. ByteDance alone apparently committed over 5 billion. And China is already running massive 10000 card AI clusters using only their own chips.

Meanwhile Nvidias sales in China are dropping. The restrictions that were meant to hurt them just pushed China to build their own stuff way faster.

    Feels like a total backfire.

The US sanctions on Nvidia have handed China’s AI market to Huawei

This isn’t even just a trump thing, biden also wanted this. China should thank both of them for helping them advance their AI capabilities even faster.
