I’m a first-generation college student getting ready for college, and I’ve committed to UH honors college.

I considered going to CC first, but my parents don’t want me to go that route, and it would be horrible for my mental health if I have to live in my house for another 2 years.

    For UH,

    • Cost of attendance is about $36,000/year
    • My actual out-of-pocket cost is around $29,000 for the first year. After that I'm moving out of university housing and not getting a meal plan so hopefully all I have to pay is tuition.
    • I received about $10,000 in aid (a $2,000/year scholarship + a $3,000 grant, though I’m not sure if the grant is yearly)
    • I was offered $3,500 in subsidized loans and $2,000 in unsubsidized loans
    • I've been offered tuition assistance (ranging from $500-$2,000) and a $100 housing credit.

    I’ve also:

    • Submitted a financial aid appeal
    • Applied to every UH general scholarship
    • Applied to over 40 outside scholarships

Part of the reason I couldn’t apply to more scholarships is because I’ve been doing all my moms community college assignments, which takes up most of my time.

Even with all that, I still don’t know if I can afford it. My parents don’t want me taking out large loans, but they also aren’t helping financially, so I feel stuck. Its not like they don't understand, I just think they gave up after my sister, even though she highkey did it all herself.

I have some AP credits, and if I pass my exams this year, I’ll be able to skip about 4 classes, which should save some money.

I feel like my family doesn't really understand my situation. My sister got a full ride her first two years bcs my mom was really poor, and my cousin also has a full ride because of his dad is very low-income. I feel like I’m the only one who has to take out loans and figure all of this out on my own.

I really need advice on what to do, I'm still applying to more scholarships, but I'm thinking of just taking the loans and just paying it off slowly atp 😞

Can someone help me with my options?

Unfortunately you aren’t going to be able to get the private loans needed yourself in most cases. You aren’t old enough to have enough credit history for a lender to give you tens of thousands of dollars for the next 4 years. Unless your parents or other family member or responsible adult wants to co-sign with you, I wouldn’t get your hopes up too high. Those federal ones through FAFSA are not the issue here though as those you can accept no problem.
