I’ve been insured with State Farm since I was 16, 35 years. My 16 year old gets her license today so I’ve started shopping around for another provider. This is the first time I’ll be selecting and setting up an insurance policy entirely on my own, so I’m hoping to get some advice. I'm just nervous as I want to make sure I pick the best liability/uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage especially since I am out of work. Just want to make sure all my bases are covered.

We’re located in Texas and both drive older, paid-off vehicles: mine is a 2010 Toyota 4Runner, and my daughter’s is a 2011 Toyota Corolla. At this point, I’m leaning toward Progressive, but I’m trying to decide between their “Choice” and “Recommended” packages, as well as how to approach the various coverage options.

I would really appreciate any guidance on appropriate coverage limits, useful add-ons, or anything else I should be considering. Up to now, I’ve carried full coverage on my 4Runner, but navigating all of this on my own for the first time is a bit overwhelming.

Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Maybe im thinking too much into this but I’m nervous with her as a new driver ha ha

    2. Add her onto your State Farm policy today. That will at least give you the coverage she needs plus a baseline price to compare other insurers. You should also seriously consider shopping your coverage with more than just one other insurer if you’re serious about trying to improve your coverage and price. Call a few local agents to see what they can do.

Whether or not you have Collision or Comprehensive depends on how easily you could replace either car. With cars that old, adding Roadside Assistance might make sense if you don’t have AAA, but realize that some insurers count those calls as claims. You didn’t mention the limits you buy, but you want more than the state minimums (we usually recommend $100k/$300k here), and you should also seriously consider UM/UIM given the high percentage of uninsured drivers in TX.

      Congratulations to her!
