We reached out to a property manager who had a listing for a house for rent. We wanted to schedule a time for a viewing, but we were told that we should get an agent represent us.

    This was their exact words:

"I am the property manager and represent the owner. It is best if you find your own agent to represent you and show it to you. Any local realtor can schedule a viewing and access the application instructions. We do not accept sight unseen applications, but most realtors would be willing to do a video tour if you are not in the area."

We would just like to know if this is normal? Seems a bit inconvenient for just a rental, but we are used to renting apartments.

Do I need a realtor to view a rental property

Not normal for a rental. They’re just being lazy. You don’t need an agent. If they won’t show it themselves, that’s a red flag for how they’ll handle problems later. I’d look elsewhere.

      Yes, it’s very normal here.

I personally don’t mind showing my own listings but it’s always a good idea to have your own agent, even if just for the showing.

    3. Location dependent. Common in many areas (typically HCOL large metros, but not always)

Usually, the property manager or listing agent will show the place directly. But in some markets or with certain listings, they prefer you have your own agent to handle showings and paperwork. It’s a bit inconvenient, but not unheard of. Just ask if they can show it themselves or clarify if an agent is truly required.
