I know hair people are going to come after me for this and honestly fair enough, I'm sure there's a difference. But I have short pretty normal hair and for years I bought a separate shampoo and conditioner without really thinking about it, it's just what you did. Both bottles would run out at slightly different rates so there was always one that lingered forever, I kept buying more before I actually needed it, and somehow I always had three half-empty bottles on the shower shelf.

Switched to a single 2-in-1 about four months ago, big bottle, cost me around $4 at the drugstore. Still going. I wash my hair maybe four times a week and it looks completely fine, same as before. Nobody has said anything about my hair looking worse. I have not noticed anything about my hair looking worse. The shower shelf has one bottle on it now and that alone has improved my life in a small but measurable way.

This is not advice for everyone, I understand some hair types actually need specific products and I'm not here to argue with anyone about that. But if you have simple hair and you've just been buying two bottles out of habit without thinking about it, maybe try the switch for one cycle and see what happens. The $4 bottle doing the job of two $7 bottles is kind of hard to argue with

Stopped buying shampoo and conditioner separately. One bottle of 2-in-1 has lasted me almost four months now.

    1. > This is not advice for everyone,

      TL;DR is this.

Somewhere between my hair type and my current climate, my barber actually steered me away from using any conditioners entirely, and just using appropriate shampoo.

Edit – another factor is frequency of use. Obviously also incredibly YMMV depending on your local climate, hair type, lifestyle, medication you may be on, and about 3 billion other factors. For many people – you can probably get away with a wash every 3 days or so. Again, your specific circumstances could mean more or less. But the TL;DR is don’t just automatically wash your hair every day if it doesn’t need it. Helps cut your shampoo usage right down. Personally, I am currently doing about every 3 to 4 days if I don’t do anything – but the gym, going swimming, or just a particularly hot and sweaty day outside will definitely trigger a wash. Although for a while I was on Isotretinoin….and that made it feel like once a week was more than enough (but again – swimming/gym required more frequent washes). I guess the real protip – if you have a routine gym schedule, sync your hair washing with gym days. Should rarely have to wash extra outside of that schedule.

Sure, but 2 in 1 is worse at cleaning and moisturizing your hair than just using separate bottles, just understand that

I am fine with that ! I have had short and long hair and I have curly hair! I used both 2 in one or 2 separate, I can agree that both are fine especially some brands. There might be a difference but not huge . Also one can leave the shampoo longer (2in1) to get better results

    4. Good advice, OP.

With my current zero maintenance buzz hair cut, I use Vo5 from Dollar General 3-in-1. It was $1 for 18 ounce and lasts at least two months.
