I’ve noticed with shared dinners, groceries, trips, and group expenses, people either:
- forget who paid
- underpay
- overpay
- or one person quietly absorbs small costs over time
And eventually everyone just gives up tracking it properly
Curious how people here handle shared expenses while still trying to stay financially organised/frugal?
Do you:
- split instantly?
- use apps? like Splytio or Splitwise?
- track manually?
- just rotate who pays each time?
Does splitting shared expenses ever become more exhausting than the actual expense itself?

Joint accounts exist…
Friends we pay eachother back instantly, it’s just what we do. With my partner it always comes out in the wash and evens out overall without stress but I track my own spending manually. Travel I pay hotel then they pay our spending on the trip till they even out.
Splitwise user here. But admittedly it’s difficult to find the line sometimes between letting it all come out in the wash and adding things to the app haha depends on the group dynamics
My family of 6 adults splits irregular expenses by dividing the price by six and leaving an envelope out for everyone’s share. You sign the envelope when you put in your money.
For regular expenses, we just work out the average and then make monthly contributions based on it. Any excess is kept for the future but it usually works out almost on the dot.
