I used to rent the Rug Doctor from the grocery store twice a year. It was $45 a day plus $20 for their mandatory cleaning solution. I realized I was spending over $130 a year just to drag a machine into my house that was previously used on god-knows-what pet messes. I even read a news story once about people using these exact rental machines to clean up crime scenes after a murder. The thought of bringing that into my living room makes me sick. The smell of wet dog from a """"clean"""" rental machine was the last straw.

I finally bit the bullet and bought a portable spot cleaner with a built-in steam function. The math is simple: it cost me about the same as two rentals, but the steam actually sanitizes. I don't even buy expensive chemical formulas anymore, just water and a tiny bit of white vinegar. It paid for itself in 6 months and my house actually feels clean. Stop renting those gross machines.

Renting carpet cleaners is a massive waste of money. Plus, a horrifying realization about shared machines.

    1. I bought a Bissell Big Green years ago. Expensive but an absolute beast when it comes to carpet cleaning.

Truth. I had a little green Bissell for years. Finally gave it to my nephews. Totally worth buying if you have carpet.

At least you didn’t spend much money. I had to pay for a Cleaner fella to come to my 1 BR apartment, (~650 sq. ft.) so that I’d receive my Deposit back when moving out.

I received the Deposit back. 👍

But paying for that cleaning was $230 in today’s dollars.

I bought a carpet cleaner from Costco for $160. Totally worth it to have my own

    6. It’s cheaper to just buy one and use it twice a year tbh. Even if you stick to chemical cleaners it’s a lot cheaper to do it yourself with your own over time than it is to rent.

Our Bissell has probably saved us thousands of dollars and it’s still going after 10 years of pretty regular use. There are some items where an upfront investment can save you money long term, and for our family this is one.

    8. I’ve actually considered going back to renting the machine just so I don’t have to store the thing to only use it twice a year

Better yet, just get the damned dirt sponges (i.e. carpet and carpet pads) out of your house. Your lungs will thank you.

    10. If you have family somewhat nearby, you can share things like this between households. As long as they didn’t have pets you didn’t like, or crime scenes.

My mom told me I could borrow her rug cleaner as long I didn’t tell my brother she had one. He borrowed one from her and returned it so dirty she replaced it.

Lmao 😂 this is some bot astroturfing trying to sell a carpet cleaner

As I read I was wondering when the shill would show up but it never did. Then I checked the comments 😂
