Hi everyone,

I made some curry 2 days ago and left a half opened can of coconut milk and tomato paste in the fridge. It looks and smells ok but my neighbour was telling me food stored in opened cans in the fridge can be deadly.

Would love to get your advice on what you think?
Both cans are covered in cling wrap with a rubber band and have been in the fridge since the moment they were opened.

Is it safe to consume tomato paste and coconut milk that’s been in fridge for 2 days? (Opened cans)

What on earth? Of course. Nothing goes bad in the refrigerator after 2 days.

    2. As others have said, 2 days is no problem but get in the habit of storing leftovers from cans in storage containers either in the fridge or freezer.

I think baby food containers used to say not to use after 48hours, idk if they still do. That’s because of dipping the spoon in after it’s been in the baby’s mouth & because babies are more susceptible to illness. Maybe that’s where they got the idea that this applies to all food? I refrigerate and cover cans using “food huggers” which are reusable silicone veggie covers that happen to fit cans. I also decant the food into glassware and treat it like other leftovers. For tomato paste, I’d keep it longer than most things because it’s acidic. I’m less experienced with coconut milk. I think as long as it’s sealed, you can use it until it gets moldy or stinky. If it’s not sealed, a few days is probably fine but it might taste like “refrigerator” lol.

You should be cautious with storing anything tomato in metal containers. Tomatoes are acidic and can break down the metal. A glass container would be better.

    5. Yeah, you’re fine. I mean, storing it in the cans isn’t optimal, but for 2 days, unless it smells or looks super weird, you’re all good.

Just so you know in the future, tomato paste actually freezes beautifully. If you put it in a plastic bag and flatten it out, you can just snap off a chunk when you need it.

    6. Are you new to this frugal stuff ? If it dosen’t smell like grandmas feet and have visible mold you can eat it
