Hello everyone, I grew up frugally, and now I’m in my early 30s and have become more frugal than ever before. I never just toss old clothes. I utilize them as a rag when I deep-clean my apartment.

I wear 15-year-old underwear that has a bunch of holes and unapologetically will keep using them until they can’t function as underwear. After that, I’ll probably use them as a rag.

Ugh. The second I can feel my junk rubbing my pants or shorts because there’s a hole in my underwear, they go in the trash. And I don’t need rags so badly that I’ll use old underwear for it. 😉

This is how I was raised as well. We had a rag bag for cleaning. Wore old clothes forever and couldn’t have cared less we never had a roll of paper towels in our house.

    3. For underwear, with my yo-yo weight, it is the elastic surrendering that determined their life span. Now retired and a steady chubby , but 1990 sets are fine. I rotate four pairs and as they wear out, they get discarded and replaced with a pair in storage. I will not live long enough to run out.

I would hope if you’re going to use them as a rag they are thoroughly bleached first.

Also I would consider /r/bifl on socks and underwear. I love my socks from darn tough and armachillo underwear from Duluth Trading.

A good portion of us might remember when we were younger our parents would buy us socks & underwear for holiday (mainly Christmas). If they’re wanting to gift me something, a new pair of good socks or underwear is cheap for them and after a few years I’ll be set for quite a while.

That’s not being frugal, that’s being cheap.

Assuming you can afford to, buy new underwear.

    6. I think you know as understand the difference between frugal and cheap.

Something is frugal when it’s good value, the lowest price that does everything properly.

Cheap is when its as low cost as posible, even if its not fit for purpose.

the point of frugality is that you can afford the things you need and you deserve comfortable clothes.

I had a visceral reaction to reading that you’re going to rub your old underwear all over things as a rag.

I just had to tell my husband off for putting on a pair of boxers with a hole so big a full cheek was out…

But yes, we usually wear things until they’re rags and then we use them as rags (when it’s not underwear 🤢). The cost of underwear where I live though, is beyond ridiculous.

I decided the few pairs of undies I had were too uncomfy a while ago and I was freeballing some days… so I’m freeballing every day now haha and not buying new undies.
