Hi everyone, I’m in Ohio and I have State Farm insurance. I recently got a small chip/crack in my windshield and I’m not sure what I should do next.

My car is a leased Hyundai, so I don’t know if I should:

    1. go through State Farm,
    2. go directly to Hyundai,
    3. or just take it to a windshield repair shop.

The damage looks small right now, but I’m worried it could spread. I also don’t know if State Farm usually covers windshield repair in Ohio, or if making a claim for something like this could affect my rates. I'm ready to pay out of pocket as well

Has anyone in Ohio with State Farm dealt with this before? What would you recommend I do first?

    1. Find out what it costs to get the repair done, and if it’s cheap, just pay out of pocket. A windshield claim is still a claim, and while it’s certainly not going to count against you the same way an at-fault collision claim would, it still counts against you and could impact renewal, premium, etc. down the line. And of course, if the repair amount is within or close o your deductible (if there is one), then you should really hesitate to involve insurance.

If the repair cost is sizable (and sometimes that’s the case with newer cars), then you have to decide whether it’s worth the potential downside to get SF involved.

And check your lease docs – if they require you to only use OEM windshields, you should know that before getting the repair done.

    2. Check with your insurance. Mine covers glass replacement with 0 out of pocket and no deductible. And my rates don’t go up with a glass claim

    3. Since you’re in ohio I would check if a place like safelite can come out and patch it/fix it rather than replace (They only charged like 50 bucks for it around 10 years ago lol). I wouldn’t file unless you need to entirely replace the windshield, but that may still end up needing to go out of pocket depending on what your deductible is.
