I am getting calls almost daily from my sister’s college from the student loan office? I’ve ignored them so far. What could the legitimately be calling about?
My sister is married and lives in a different state. I don’t have anything to do with her finances. When I asked her, she said she’ll “take care of it”.
I assume she’s behind on payments, and the loan office thinks I can help on some way. But I don’t want to ask her about her business that shouldn’t concern me.
What should I do?
My sisters school keeps calling me about her student loans

Check your credit reports and make sure no one fraudulently used you as a cosigner.
EDIT: And just know if this didn’t happen, you are never responsible for your sisters loans and can continue to ignore.
Yes, she’s likely behind on her payments and they’re trying to find a way to get in contact with her. It’s up to you whether you tell her they’re contacting you or not.
When you sign up for federal student loans, they make you give two contacts. They call the contacts if the person is delinquent or in default as a way to create pressure to pay up. Sounds like your sister is in a bit of a rough patch with her loans, but as long as you didn’t co-sign you can safely ignore.
Did she put you down as a cosignor? Honestly just answer the call and tell them that you are not your sister. Id they say you’re a cosignor, check your credit and confront your sister
Had this happen with my sister once. She pit me down as a reference/contact whatever. The college she was atrending at the time called me trying to get information on how to contact her for payment.
Told them Ive had zero contact with her for over 10 years, gave them the last know number I had, and wished them luck. They were understanding with the fact that I wanted nothing to do with her and respected my wishes to be removed as her contact when I asked.
I suggest just answering the call and explaining the siutation. Mentioning you were added without consent and verify what she used your info for.
Tell them explicitly not to call you anymore. They have to oblige.
Next time they call ask them to remove you as a contact.
I suspect she’s behind on payments and she’s not responding to them. They don’t want you to help pay (unless you agreed to be a co-signer on her loans?!?), but they want you to provide updated contact information for her or confirm that the contact information they have for her is correct.
So many things. Just answer the call and talk to them. You wouldn’t believe how much better you will feel after you do this, no matter what the outcome.
Do they have her number to contact her directly? If not, maybe supply it?
And block their number.
first things first, pull your credit reports to make sure they’re not listed. All three major bureaus.
If not, tell them to stop calling you. You’re not a cosigner and you have no ability to influence her. She probably gave your contact info when applying as a reference or alternative contact.
As a former collector for delinquent student loans, she is almost certainly behind on her payments and ignoring the calls to her from her servicer. They are contacting other people listed on her account in an attempt to reach her about her delinquent payments. If she cannot afford to make payments, she may be able to put her loans in forbearance/deferment for a short period depending on the type of loan and the type of hardship. Many people are unaware of the options available to them when they are unable to make student loan payments so they just let them sit and ignore the calls.
I got a call from a debt collector for a cousin I have no relationship with. When it comes to debt, collectors will harass everyone they can get ahold of
