One of Instacart’s requirements for drivers is that my “auto insurance policy covers commercial use.”

I’m not certain if they’re saying they only want my auto policy to have a rideshare/delivery endorsement like Doordash and Uber Eats does, or if they’re actually asking for a commercial policy.

My insurance is with Progressive, and they confirmed that this would be an unacceptable risk for both commercial and personal lines, and they were weirded out by this requirement as well. Can someone confirm what it is Instacart’s asking for?

They require an actual Commercial Auto policy, as unlike others (Uber, DoorDash, etc.), they don’t cover anything auto insurance related while you’re working.

Rideshare endorsements only cover you while you’re waiting on an order or just logging in. It does not cover you while working on an order or transporting it/customers. That’s why some companies include coverage during this time, but Instacart doesn’t.

Progressive offers commercial auto policies if you want to stay with them, otherwise you can find a local agent who can shop for you and answer any questions you may have.

DoorDash and rideshare services, those services are considered a commercial use. They are not asking for a commercial or business policy specifically, there are personal auto policies that will cover the commercial use such as rideshare with an endorsement.
