In a 12-page report, the CBO stated that acquisition costs for a national missile defense system would total more than $1 trillion. That includes funding for interceptor layers, a space-based missile warning and tracking system, research and development and improvements in the system’s integration and performance.

The space-based interceptor layer would account for roughly 70 percent of acquisition costs and about 60 percent of the system’s total price tag, the CBO noted.

Gen. Mike Guetlein, the director of the Office of Golden Dome for America, estimated in March that the missile defense system will cost $185 billion. Republicans in Congress already allocated $25 billion for the project via the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which President Trump signed into law last July.

The Pentagon is also asking Congress to provide $17 billion for the project via reconciliation, while officials at the Defense Department said last month that $750 billion of the Trump administration’s record $1.5 trillion defense budget request for fiscal 2027 is earmarked for the missile defense system, drones, artificial intelligence and building up the defense industrial base.

The gulf between the cost estimates from Guetlein and the CBO indicate the possibility that the “objective architecture is more limited” for the Pentagon’s plans for the project than the missile defense system that the CBO is accounting for, the new report stated.

The difference could also stem from the Defense Department expecting “significant funding from other accounts” to contribute to the system, while the report noted that both scenarios could be true.

The administration’s fiscal 2027 budget request described the Golden Dome as a “layered defense of the homeland” from U.S. adversaries that “keeps Americans safe, while using innovative program management and acquisition approaches to prudently employ taxpayer dollars.”

Yet while the CBO report acknowledged that the missile defense system “would be far more capable than defenses” that the U.S. has today, it “would not be an impenetrable shield or be able to fully counter a large attack of the sort that Russia or China might be able to launch.”

The report added that a national missile defense system “might deter or defeat smaller raids launched by a peer adversary (possibly as part of a regional conventional conflict), but it could also prompt a peer adversary to increase the size of such raids.”

The gap between 175B and 1T is the part worth reading. The first number sells the idea. Acquisition cost shows the bill. If the space layer is most of the cost, the money points toward interceptors, sensors, tracking, launch, integration, chips, power, and contractors already built for federal defense work. Still not a blind buy. These programs move slow. They get cut, argued over, renamed, repriced, then funded in pieces. Watch contract language and budget lines. Not speeches.

Do not fall into this trap. paedos r making/creating another excuse for more spending/more cover ups etc. There is no reason russia/china would attack. Just lookup, russia couldnot deal with ukraine like 4-5 yrs? USA is protected by ocean and takes time to arrive any missle or ship. Even a missle or two arrives, it wont make much damage since US is a huge. Evry contry knows that USA is a biggest nuclear bagholder, so they r afraid of RETALLIATION .

Remember, Soviet block failed bc of too much defense spending. Same fate is going to hit russia – putin is spending tooo much, so country is slowly drowning into mud.

    4. This country was slowly going bankrupt, now it’s heading into an accelerated bankruptcy by idiots…
