People who got IBR forgiveness this year, are your student loans a distant memory or are you having issues?

I've posted my story before, how I got the Golden email early 2026, and it's been a struggle to get Mohela to zero my balance and close my account. They say be patient. Meanwhile they owe me for overpaying past 300 payments.

How did the other servicers handle this? I would love to hear my experience is the exception, but if issues are widespread, I would love to know.

Same boat with the overpayment mess – they keep saying “processing” but it’s been months now. My balance shows zero but account is still technically open and they won’t release the overpayment amount

Really curious if other servicers are handling this better because Mohela seems completely lost on how to process these forgiveness cases

My servicer was Nelnet. I got my Golden email in early February, and I want to say that within about a month, everything had cleared out from their system. The refund for overpayment took about 60 days. I was expecting a direct deposit, but it ended up being a paper check.

Congrats on getting the forgiveness though! The level of exhilaration I felt getting that email was intense!

I think that I experienced the best possible good fortune and service with MOHELA when my loans were discharged in March. They zeroed out my balance within three days and by mid April it was off my credit report. I think it is a very long queue that somehow I started at the front of and even received good phone service at the time. Keep the faith it will all happen for you!

Edited to add that my case was simplified by having zero over payments/refunds to deal with.

Credit score went down 15 pts ish then back to normal 2 months later. Quit my second job to be with my daughter more on weekends. Family thinking of replacing the debt with a bigger mortgage in a years closer to work and in a better school district. Basically feels like someone click the fast forward button on my finances 10 years in time to see my daughter grow up 🙂
