I am SO confused, I cry every time I start thinking about this. I was working for a non-profit pursuing PSLF. Mentally and emotionally could not take it anymore so I left and am now a 1099 employee. Obviously my income has taken a hit and is now variable by the week. But I am confused on whether or not I have to report I am no longer at a non-profit and that I've changed jobs? I did my taxes and my income was definitely lower. Do I just pick a new plan now?

Back in March I made a payment of 217.79 and then they went on forbearance again. Could I still make payments? Is it worth it?

I'm stressed because I feel guilty for not tackling this sooner. Graduated undergrad in 2018 and got my masters in 2021. Now I'm 32, got married in august, and I'm spiraling because I want to have a baby but I feel so crippled with this because I feel like any money I have isn't really mine. Any advice would be truly appreciated.

    1. If you are no longer pursuing PSLF then you don’t have to certify your employment. You can do so in the future if you find yourself back at an eligible job.

Are you still on SAVE forbearance?

    2. Organic-tide on

PSLF is not a payment plan, it’s a forgiveness program, so you don’t have to do anything, you just won’t be able to apply your payments to PSLF anymore. I assume you’re already on an IDR plan, so your payments are based on your income, and I believe you can still make payments if you’re on forbearance. I don’t know what to say to console you, debt sucks and I’m in the same boat having left my job to start a private practice, but on the bright side I’m sure your wages are greater than they would be without an education.
