Hi All – I was viewing a bunch of posts that are similar but none really have questions (recently) about hitting large animals.
Im in Montana and I hit an elk this morning going 65. Im totally fine. My car is 12 years old with 140k on the clock and I don't think it's coming back from this. No one else was on the road, in the car or involved in anyway. It was dark at 5:15 am when i was on the road.
Has anyone here hit a large critter and dealt with insurance? If so, Are there lessons you took away from dealing with your insurance that you wish you would have known before?
Or – Insurance People – What lessons do you think I should keep in mind when handling this to make this as easy as possible. I loved this car and was hoping for 60k more miles :/

There’s not really any lessons to be learned here. Sounds like a pretty straightforward comprehensive claim. Assuming you carry that coverage you’ll file a claim, your insurer will inspect the vehicle and either repair it or total it out.
If its financially repairable you’ll owe your deductible to the shop when the repair is done. If it’s totalled your insurer will take the deductible from your settlement amount.
If you’re worried about the value, make sure you review the valuation report that will be generated for your vehicle to ensure all the vehicle info (year, make, mileage, options, condition) is correct.
Let’s hope you had Comp. and you’re owed ACV, not sale price. Pretty straight forward.
