I need advice. I’m 32 F and Ex boyfriend 30 M and I signed a lease on a new apartment, he left after 3 months. The rent is 3k/ mo that I covered while I thought we were trying to work out coming back to the other, but it didn’t work. I have 0 in my savings and 400 credit score. I make very good money at work, and I can save the next few months a new apartment. But what do I do about the low credit score? Doesn’t every place want 2x the rent and 600 credit? I fjcked up as a kid with my first credit card and cancelled it 2 years ago. I was told canceling creates an 8 year “punishment” where I can’t increase credit. I already applied for a SavorOne credit card which is supposed to help. But certainly not in enough time before August. Even if I went back to my parents home (please don’t send me back) that still leaves me with years to create good credit.
Bad credit score. No place to go.

I suggest finding a roommate to replace your Ex share of rent. I have a question. Did your Ex co-sign the lease?
Is the only account on your credit report the one you canceled? I’m not sure what 8 year “punishment” you’re referring to. If the card was canceled but you still owed money on it that was never paid and it went to collections, then you’d have a derogatory remark on your report. Those can stay on your report for up to 7 years, but it doesn’t automatically preclude you from obtaining other credit if you get approved elsewhere.
One potential option to pursue regarding the rent you paid when he left—you could sue him in small claims court for the rent he would’ve paid had he lived there for the full lease.
If you don’t have good credit, most places will look past it. But you’re going to have to put down a bigger deposit or prepay extra months.
How do you make good money but have a 400 credit score? 1 derog won’t drop your score that low. There is more to the story. Have you actually pulled your credit report?
Woah! Looks like some places in Florida don’t credit check. Alright 😉
I would just open another credit card and try. Just use it for gas for the month your credit card’s going to be your best bet. Your cell phone should help with your credit if you have a contract if one of your parents will put you on one of their credit cards that they pay off every month. That will help build your credit as well. Good luck!
