Got this interesting reply from Mohela today. What caught my eye is the fact that the forebearance is in effect until 2028 for SAVE enrollees, even though SAVE is going away. interesting, any caveats you guys think?

    Thank you for contacting MOHELA,

You may apply to change to a different Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Plan at any time. IDR plans include the following, Income-Based Repayment (IBR), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), and Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR). Please note, the option to apply for SAVE is no longer available.

The best way to compare repayment plans is by using the “Loan Simulator” at StudentAid.gov/loan-simulator. You can use this tool to estimate your monthly payment amount on the different repayment plans available and compare plans side by side.

To apply for an IDR plan electronically visit StudentAid.gov/IDR or download and print the application at StudentAid.gov/forms-library under the Loan Repayment drop down menu.

Processing has resumed for the Income-Based Repayment (IBR), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), and Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) applications. All other IDR applications will remain on hold at this time.

Forbearances are being placed automatically for borrowers on the SAVE Repayment Plan through October 31, 2028. Borrowers that have a pending IDR application may also be placed on a forbearance until your application is processed.

If you submitted an IDR application prior to April 27th, 2025, and your application has not been processed yet, you can now reapply at StudentAid.gov/IDR. This allows you to use your IRS verified income and select an eligible plan which may expedite processing. Your previous application will be automatically canceled. You can track your application status by logging into your StudentAid.gov account.
