best affordable hair dye for gray coverage that doesn’t turn brassy in 3 weeks

i am fighting the brassiness battle for like two years now. drugstore box dyes either wash out of my grays in 2 weeks or turn this weird orangey brown thats somehow worse than the grays. i cant justify $150+ every 6 weeks for roots. i tried a few of the natural ammonia free ones that are supposed to be gentler. some covered okay initially but they fade patchy on the resistant gray hairs around my temples. its like the dye just slides off those specific strands.

i do need something that doesnt make me look like i used shoe polish or left it on too long. bonus points if it doesn't smell like a chemical factory. open to permanent or demi, just want something consistent that doesnt break the bank.
